Most adults share a common trait: we have spent thousands of hours sitting in classrooms. Because of this lifelong familiarity, it is incredibly easy to assume we instinctively understand what a school is, how it should function, and what “good” teaching looks like. However, this personal history is a psychological trap. In professional circles—especially for educational technology and IT specialists—relying on personal school memories can severely bias our assumptions about curriculum and instruction. To build physical and digital environments that actually serve today’s students, we must first unlearn our own past.
When we picture a classroom, most of us conjure up a familiar scene: rows of forward-facing desks, a teacher lecturing at a whiteboard, and students taking silent paper tests. This is the “Standard Model of Education”. It is built on the assumptions that “telling is teaching” and that tests are flawless, isolated measures of what a brain has retained. But cognitive science has thoroughly debunked these passive methods. Learning is a dynamic, highly social, and active process—not a passive download of facts. If we let memories of this traditional, lecture-based model dictate the technologies and layouts we deploy, we end up actively restricting modern educators who require far more flexibility.
Our personal histories split us into two distinct professional camps. Those who succeeded in traditional classrooms tend to champion systems that replicate their own path, believing “if it worked for me, it must work for everyone”. Conversely, those who struggled or felt alienated tend to advocate for entirely different structures. But both perspectives are flawed. For one, human memory is notoriously unreliable; the school we think we remember is rarely the school that actually existed. Furthermore, even our former classmates experienced the exact same school in wildly different ways. The hard truth is that our individual education deserves “no special consideration” when designing modern educational systems.
When educators propose “crazy ideas”—like classrooms centered around modular clusters, dynamic screen casting, or direct collaborative access to external experts—they are rejecting the static, de-contextualized tasks of the Standard Model. They are designing for “deeper learning” and “authentic learning,” which require students to tackle complex, real-world problems over extended periods. If IT and ed-tech leaders judge these requests through the lens of their own static, easy-to-manage childhood classrooms, they will inevitably push back.
To build effective learning environments, we must become skeptical of our own nostalgia. By recognizing our personal biases, we can move past what we think we know about schooling and start supporting what learning science proves today’s students actually need to thrive.
