Learning According to School

Here is another post motivated by my clean out of old files. In 2013, I prepared a conference presentation (which was never delivered due to a scheduling problem). In that presentation, I claimed the dominant model of learning that seemed to be accepted by schools was grounded on six assumptions:

  • Individual are cognitive unit
  • Knowledge is additive toward truth
  • To know about is sufficient
  • Agreement is desired
  • Defer to authority
  • Educations in the sum of its parts

I believe the assumptions remain valid. In the presentation, I intended to argue schools should adopt a assumptions about learning that are more accurate. Specifically:

  • Social construction of knowledge
  • Idea improvement
  • Deep understanding is knowledge of
  • Discourse is desired
  • Construct based upon authoritative
  • Knowledge is emergent
